About The Artist

Anthony Blackman's interest in Maritime painting was spawned by the influences and activities relating to the River Thames off his home-town of Gravesend and observing life on the river.

The river life was fascinating to him and at an early age he was sketching ships and local river scenes. He spent his early student days at Gravesend School of Art where he developed his interests, which later influenced his decision to specialise in Marine Painting.

Anthony attended the Royal College of Art, London from 1954 - 57.

The American Scene

In 1983/4 the Lykes container vessels berthed off Gravesend. Anthony was invited, by Captain Karl Fanning of the Dr. Lykes, to paint his ship off Gravesend. Several more commissions followed and he was invited to do a one man show in Galveston, U.S.A. which subsequently led to other commissions and exhibitions.

Anthony subsequently began dividing his time working between U.K. and U.S.A.

Anthony's home base and studio was at Gravesend on the River Thames, some 25 miles from London.

Anthony exhibited widely across the U.K. and U.S.A. He was made an honorary citizen of Galveston, Texas in 1984 and more recently, in 2006, was Artist in Residence, in recognition of his work in Galveston and Houston.

Anthony's work has great appeal to Watermen of the Thames, Tug crew members, Warfingers and members of the public interested in the river, its traditions and its history. Over the years he had several one- man exhibitions, both in the UK and USA. Through researching his subject for many years, Anthony built up a wealth of knowledge of river and ocean vessels, ports and associated subjects.
